Case Study

Train Water Leak Test Facility – Alstom

Overview

Design and construction of a traversing water test facility for V/Line rail cars, enabling controlled weather testing to verify sealing performance against Australian and international standards.

Scope of Work

  • Traversing water spray gantry

  • Inground pit with FRP grating

  • Rail car support stands

  • Pumping and pipework systems

  • PLC and HMI control system

Key Challenges

  • Major civil works within an operational facility

  • Confined construction environment

  • Multi-disciplinary coordination (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, controls)

  • No disruption to production

Solution

A fully enclosed traversing gantry system was developed to move over a stationary rail car, delivering controlled water flow and pressure across the roof and sides.
Modular construction techniques were used to minimise installation time and allow ongoing production.

Outcome

  • Water testing integrated into existing production area

  • Reduced handling and movement of rail cars

  • Improved manufacturing efficiency

  • Delivered on schedule and within budget
